Instant Pot is the brand that made the electric pressure cooker a mainstream kitchen appliance, and it now covers multi-cookers, air fryers, toaster-oven air fryers, sous vide tools and more. It suits busy households that want one appliance for soups, rice, beans, roasts and weeknight dinners. The 6-quart Duo is the safe default, the Rio is the lower-cost alternative, the Pro is the better-built upgrade, and the Duo Crisp adds an air-fry lid. Skip it if you already own a good pressure cooker and air fryer, or want a fully manual stovetop pressure cooker.

History and positioning
The Instant Pot came out of a group of former Ottawa tech workers led by Robert Wang, who worked on the design from 2008 and launched the first model in 2010 as a 6-in-1 appliance that combined pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice cooking, yogurt making, sauteing and warming. The brand became known through word of mouth and later through deal events, and it was a best seller during major sales events in the late 2010s.
The corporate story has had turns. The business later became part of a group that also owned Corelle, Pyrex and CorningWare. In June 2023 the parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and the appliance business was sold to the private-equity firm Centre Lane Partners. In April 2024 the company announced it would operate as Instant Pot Brands. Its stated brand families include Instant Pot (multi-cookers), Instant Pot Accu (sous vide circulators), Instant Ace (blenders), Instant Omni (toaster ovens) and Instant Vortex (air fryers and ovens).
For a shopper, the bankruptcy does not change how an Instant Pot works, but it is a reason to buy from a seller that offers clear returns and to keep your receipt and model number. Product naming is also messy: models are renamed, discontinued and re-released as variants, so always check the exact listing.

Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Stainless Steel | Slow cooks, makes rice and yogurt, steams, sautés, warms and sterilizes, with an app featuring 800+ recipes.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonThe brand’s default model: 6 quarts, stainless steel, seven functions including slow cook, rice, yogurt, steam, saute, warm and sterilize, with an app listing 800-plus recipes. Most online recipes assume a 6-quart Duo, which makes it the easiest first pot. The limitation is controls: it uses button presses and has fewer presets than the Pro, and the steam release is louder. For a deeper look see our Instant Pot Duo 6 Quart review.
Instant Pot Rio 6 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot Rio 6 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Black | Slow cooks, makes rice, steams, sautés, makes yogurt and keeps food warm.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonThe Rio is the value-focused version of the classic: a 7-in-1 6-quart pressure cooker in black with slow cooking, rice, steaming, sauteing, yogurt and warming. It fits shoppers who want pressure cooking without paying for extras. The limitation is that it is positioned below the Duo and Pro, and some comparisons note feature differences such as pressure level options, so check the product page for the functions you need.
Instant Pot Rio Mini 4 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot Rio Mini 4 Qt 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Black | Slow cooks, makes rice, steams, sautés, makes yogurt and keeps food warm.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonA 4-quart Rio in black that suits one to three people, small kitchens and side dishes. It lists the same seven functions as the 6-quart Rio. The limitation is size: a 4-quart pot cannot hold a large roast or a big batch of soup, and many recipes written for 6 quarts need to be halved. It also has a smaller maximum fill, so leave room for steam and expanding foods.
Instant Pot Pro 6 Qt 10-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot Pro 6 Qt 10-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Black | Slow cooks, makes rice and grains, steams, sautés, cooks sous vide, makes yogurt, keeps food warm and sterilizes.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonThe Pro adds functions such as sous vide and cooking grains, along with a sterilize mode, to a 6-quart black body. Reviewers describe it as the better-built cooker for frequent use, with more presets and quieter steam release than the Duo. The limitation is cost, and the Pro lacks an air-fry lid, so it does not replace an air fryer. Choose it if you cook with the pot several times a week.
Instant Pot Duo Crisp Ultimate 6.5 Qt 13-in-1

Instant Pot Duo Crisp Ultimate 6.5 Qt 13-in-1 Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer | Roasts, dehydrates, bakes, proofs dough, steams, slow cooks and sautés.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonA 6.5-quart pressure cooker with an additional lid for air frying, roasting, dehydrating, baking and proofing dough, according to the listing. It is designed for people who want a pressure cooker and air fryer without two appliances. One reviewer cautions that it does not behave like a standalone air fryer, so expect somewhat smaller capacity and slower crisping. The two lids also need storage space. Our guide to comparing pressure cookers can help you decide.
Instant Pot Dual Action 8-in-1 Multi-Cooker

Instant Pot Dual Action 8-in-1 Multi-Cooker, Serve Together Timer, Black | Cooks mains and sides together in separate 4 Qt and 2 Qt pots, with fast cooking and a PFAS-free pot.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonA newer design with two separate pots, a 4-quart and a 2-quart, plus a Serve Together timer so a main and a side finish at the same time. The listing mentions a PFAS-free pot. It is appealing for weeknight dinners where you want rice and a protein ready together. The limitation is that each pot is small, so a family of five may still need a bigger cooker. As a newer model, long-term reliability data is limited.
Instant Pot Vortex XL 6 Qt 4-in-1 Air Fryer

Instant Pot Vortex XL 6 Qt 4-in-1 Air Fryer, Black | Crisps, roasts, bakes and reheats, with dishwasher-safe parts and an app featuring 100+ recipes.
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonA basket-style air fryer with four functions (crisp, roast, bake, reheat), dishwasher-safe parts and an app with 100-plus recipes. It is the simplest way to get air frying from the brand. The limitation is that it does only that: if you want pressure cooking or toasting, choose another model. For cooking oils and fat, follow the manual and never fill beyond the maximum line.
Instant Pot Omni 19 Qt Toaster Oven Air Fryer

Instant Pot Omni 19QT/18L Toaster Oven Air Fryer, 7-in-1 Functions, Fits 12" Pizza, Crisps, Broils, Bakes, Roasts, Toasts, Warms, Convection, 100+ In-App Recipes, from the Makers of Instant Pot, Black
One of the home product options compared in this guide.
Check Price on AmazonA 19-quart countertop toaster oven with seven functions including air fry, convection, bake, broil, roast, toast and warm, which the listing says fits a 12-inch pizza and includes 100-plus in-app recipes. It is a good fit for small kitchens that want a toaster oven and air fryer in one. The limitation is that it is an oven, not a pressure cooker, and its footprint is wider than a basket air fryer. Keep clearance around it while it runs. Check the manual for the clearance it needs on each side.

Buying tips for Instant Pot
Reading names and size codes
Instant Pot names follow a pattern: the series (Duo, Rio, Pro), then the size in quarts, then a function count such as 7-in-1 or 10-in-1. “Crisp” or “Vortex” signals an air-fry lid or air fryer, and “Plus” often means additional presets or a connected version. Function counts are not directly comparable between series, since brands count modes differently. Compare the actual functions and the quart size, and match the size to your household: 3 quarts for one or two people, 6 quarts for most families and 8 quarts for large batches or big cuts of meat.
Which model to choose by need
| Your situation | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First pressure cooker | Duo 6 Qt | Matches most recipes; widely documented |
| Tight budget | Rio 6 Qt | Core functions at a lower price tier |
| Small household or apartment | Rio Mini 4 Qt | Smaller footprint |
| Frequent cooking, better controls | Pro 6 Qt | More presets and sous vide |
| Want crisping in the same unit | Duo Crisp Ultimate | Two lids, one base |
| Main and side together | Dual Action | Two pots with a synced timer |
Safety and use tips
Electric pressure cookers have lid locks and pressure sensors, but they still require care. Never force a lid open, keep your hands and face away from the steam release valve, and do not fill past the two-thirds mark, or past half for foods that foam or expand such as beans, rice and pasta. Check the sealing ring for cracks and wash it often, since odors can linger. Our guide to sanitizing the silicone ring covers the routine. The brand has had recalls on some older models, so check the official recall list if you are buying a used unit. For larger batches, see our 8-quart pressure cooker guide.
Release methods and what they mean for results
How you end a cooking cycle changes the food, and it is the most common source of confusion for new owners. Natural release means leaving the cooker alone until the pin drops, which suits meat, beans and soups because it keeps liquids calm. Quick release means moving the valve to venting right away, which suits vegetables, eggs and anything that overcooks easily. A hybrid, a short natural release followed by a quick release, works well for rice and larger cuts. Foods that foam, such as split peas, oatmeal and large amounts of beans, can spit through the valve if released quickly, so keep the pot below the half-full line and use natural release.
- Time starts after pressure builds. The cooking time on a recipe does not include the preheat, which can take ten minutes or more for a full pot.
- Liquid is required. Pressure cooking needs thin liquid, usually at least one cup in a 6-quart pot, to build steam.
- Do not add thickeners before cooking. Flour, cornstarch and dairy can scorch or curdle. Stir them in after pressure cooking, using the sauté function.
- Size down recipes for mini models. A 4-quart pot needs about two-thirds of a 6-quart recipe to stay within the fill line.
Warranty and service
We could not confirm warranty terms from a fetched official page. Check the manual that ships with your model and buy from a seller with a clear return policy. Because the company changed owners in 2023 and 2024, keep proof of purchase.
Common complaints to plan for
- Confusing model names. Variants and renamed models make comparison hard. Use the quart size and function list.
- Food stuck on the bottom. Thick sauces and tomato products can scorch; add enough thin liquid and layer thick ingredients on top.
- Steam release noise and splatter. Natural release is quieter; use a towel over the valve when releasing.
- Silicone ring odors. Keep a spare ring for savory and sweet dishes.
- Air-fry combo trade-offs. Crisp lids work, but they rarely match a dedicated air fryer.
Who should skip Instant Pot
Skip it if you already have a pressure cooker you like, if you prefer stovetop pressure cooking for high-heat searing, or if you want a very large capacity for canning. Pressure canning requires a purpose-made canner, so use a purpose-built canner instead of a multi-cooker.
Frequently asked questions
Is Instant Pot a good brand?
Yes for pressure cooking and multi-cooker convenience. Its air-fry combos are convenient but less specialized than dedicated air fryers.
Who owns Instant Pot?
Instant Pot Brands, owned by the private-equity firm Centre Lane Partners since the 2023 bankruptcy sale.
Which Instant Pot should I buy first?
The 6-quart Duo for most households, or the Rio if you want a lower price.
What is the difference between Duo and Pro?
The Pro adds sous vide, more presets and sturdier controls. The Duo has the basics most recipes need.
Can I use the Duo Crisp as an air fryer?
Yes, with the air-fry lid. Expect results that differ from a dedicated basket air fryer.
Can an Instant Pot be used for canning?
No. Multi-cookers are not approved for pressure canning. Use a canner designed for it.
How big an Instant Pot do I need?
3 quarts for one or two people, 6 quarts for most families, 8 quarts for large households.
Bottom line
Instant Pot remains the easiest way to get into pressure cooking. Start with the 6-quart Duo or Rio, move up to the Pro for better controls, and add a Crisp lid or a Vortex only if you need air frying. Always check the exact model and warranty before you buy.
